Supporting Communication and Swallowing in Neurodegenerative Conditions
At Adelaide Voice Therapy, we specialise in helping individuals living with neurodegenerative conditions maintain their communication skills and swallowing safety for as long as possible. Our evidence-based, person-centred approach focuses on improving quality of life through tailored therapy, education, and support. We work with individuals diagnosed with conditions such as:

  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Motor Neuron Disease (MND / ALS)
  • Dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia (FTD), primary progressive aphasia (PPA) and others
Our evidence-based, person-centred approach focuses on improving quality of life through tailored therapy, education, and support.

Neurodegenerative conditions can gradually affect speech, voice, language, and cognitive-communication abilities. Our speech pathologists are trained to assess and manage:

  • Reduced speech clarity or voice volume (common in Parkinson’s)
  • Word-finding difficulties and reduced sentence complexity
  • Memory, attention, and communication breakdowns in dementia
  • Changes in fluency, articulation, and language function in MND
  • Comprehensive speech and language assessments
  • Therapy to maintain or strengthen communication skills
  • Cognitive-communication strategies for memory, attention, and organisation
  • Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) support, including low-tech and high-tech options
  • Communication partner training for family and carers

Many people with neurodegenerative conditions experience difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), which can lead to choking, aspiration, and poor nutrition. Early assessment and proactive support can significantly improve safety and comfort. Our swallowing services include:

  • Swallowing assessments to identify changes or risks
  • Recommendations for modified food and drink textures
  • Strategies to support safe eating and drinking
  • Education and training for carers and support staff
  • Ongoing monitoring and adjustment as conditions progress

We understand that every person’s experience with a neurodegenerative condition is unique. That’s why we take the time to understand what’s most important to you and your family. Whether it’s having conversations with loved ones, enjoying a favourite meal, or maintaining independence, our therapy is designed to support what matters most.
