Kate is a Speech Pathologist with over 14 years of clinical experience her work has included voice assessment and rehabilitation, acute & subacute management of swallowing disorders, and treatment of upper airway disorders.
Kate has an adventurous spirit and loves to travel, since graduating has worked across Australia and in the UK. In London, Kate worked across various acute and community teams as a locum Speech Pathologist and held a position at the Wellington Hospital working across the acute rehabilitation unit, intensive care unit, prolonged disorders of consciousness unit and outpatient voice clinic. Kate was the lead speech pathologist in the voice clinic at Royal Darwin Hospital working alongside Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeons to diagnose voice disorders and develop treatment plans for her patients. She also worked alongside the ENT and Maxillary & Facial teams to support patients through Head and Neck Cancer treatment (radiation & surgical) in both dysphagia and voice preservation and rehabilitation and in ongoing laryngectomy management.
As a singer Kate has always had a passion for the voice. Her many years of vocal training, including studying music theatre at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, set the stage for working in this area. She understands the demands on performers and is experienced in supporting vocalists through vocal injury. She also has a particular interest in working with voice in relation to gender identity; setting up the first gender affirming voice clinic in Darwin.
Kate is skilled in instrumental swallowing assessment with both Videofluoroscopy (VFSS) and Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES). She has a comprehensive understanding of the anatomy and physiology of swallowing and is experienced in the assessment, diagnosis and management of complex swallowing disorders.
